Canada has two national sports: ice hockey and lacrosse. The former was born in Canada and is also the country's most popular sport; it is practiced in winter. The National League of hockey was founded in Montreal and is the highest professional league in the world. The latter, lacrosse, is practiced instead on grass,in summer, and its aims is to score a goal with a ball, using clubs with end nets. Among the other most popular sports, there is Canadian Football (similar to American football, but with different rules), rugby (especially women), football (the most popular sport in terms of national participation), curling ( very popular in winter), and American football and baseball, given its proximity to the United States of America, big fans of the latter two sports. The Toronto Blue Jays for example, are the city of Toronto baseball team in the top division of American baseball, Major League Baseball. In the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick is widely practiced handball.
This is an example of a game of lacrosse.
Canada also hosts a Formula 1 Grand Prix, which has taken place at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Ile de Notre Dame in Montreal since 1978. The son of Gilles Villeneuve, Jacques, was world champion in Formula 1 in 1997. Another sport that is not national in Canada, but it originated there, is canoe / kayak, specifically the Canadian canoe, practiced by strongly competitive and amateur sportsmen, sitting on their knees. Of interest is also the discipline of wrestling, as the famous Hart family is originally from Canada. In addition to the Hart family, wrestlers like Edge, Christian and Chris Jericho were born in this country. In 2012, the rider Ryder Hesjedal became the first Canadian ever to win the Tour of Italy. Over the years, the leagues of American baseball and basketball were also open to club teams in Canada, and the Canadian ice hockey league is open to teams of U.S. clubs. Football or soccer, in Canada is not followed as other sports. There is no longer a national championship for club teams, and the Canadian National Team participated in a single edition of the World Cup (Mexico 1986), exiting in the first round. However, in 2007, Canada has entered into the Major League Soccer (MLS) team of the American club Toronto FC.
